Family Optometrist in Humble
At Today’s Vision, our Humble pediatric eye doctor and the rest of our staff are equipped and experienced to treat a wide range of eye conditions. One of the most common is a condition called strabismus. Strabismus can also be referred to as crossed eyes, deviation, squint, tropia, and heterotropia. It is a condition in which both of your eyes are unable to look at the same object at the same time. They are unable to do this because the six muscles that surround the eyes are not working together as they should be, and as a result one eye looks in one direction and the other eye looks in another direction. When they eyes are both trying to focus on two objects, two images are then sent to the brain, which confuses the brain. The brain typically trains itself to ignore the image being sent from the weaker eye, which can do serious long-term damage to the vision from that eye.
Our Humble pediatric eye doctor most often sees strabismus in children. It can occur in adults on occasion as well, but it typically is part of the child’s development. If you are concerned about strabismus in your child, you should be aware of certain symptoms to look out for. The main, most obvious symptom is if your child’s eyes appear to be looking in two different directions. You may also notice that your child tends to squint one eye in sunlight, or appears to have poor depth perception. You should bring your child to visit our Humble pediatric eye doctor for regular eye exams, and especially if you think there may be a condition like strabismus developing. During the examination, our Humble pediatric eye doctor will perform a series of tests in order to evaluate how your child’s eyes are functioning together. If a diagnosis of strabismus is confirmed, we will then discuss treatment, which may include eyeglasses, eye patches, surgery, and other options.
