Do you find that your eyes are constantly red, itchy and watery? It may be that you are suffering from red eye syndrome. Many patients visit our Humble eye doctor at Today’s Vision because they are bothered by symptoms associated with red eye. We are here to give you the information you need about this common condition in order to recognize the symptoms in yourself and seek treatment if necessary. Red eyes can vary in their severity and how deeply they affect your day-to-day activities and functioning. There are several reasons why you may be experiencing red eye symptoms. One of the most common is as a result of allergies. If you find your eyes become red and itchy when you are exposed to certain allergens like pet dander, dust, pollen, or others, or if you experience the symptoms only during certain seasons, it is likely an allergic reaction.

Another common reason that red eye syndrome occurs is because of eye fatigue. If you are constantly staring at screens, or perhaps if you are in need of an update to your optical prescription, your eyes can become fatigued. Finally, if you use contact lenses and you wear them for most of the day or even overnight, you are likely to experience red eye symptoms and should try to cut down on your daily wear. If you think any of these situations apply to you, you should visit our Humble eye doctor so that we can evaluate the cause of your red eye symptoms and come up with a viable treatment option.

The recommendations our Humble eye doctor makes for treatment of your red eye symptoms at Today’s Vision will depend on your individual symptoms and their severity. For most people, treatment of red eyes is simple, unless the symptoms are the result of another, more complicated eye condition. Resting your eyes, applying a cold compress over your eyes, taking a break from contact lenses, using either over-the-counter or prescription eye drops, and medications is usually enough to give patients relief from their symptoms. We can give you a more personalized treatment plan during your next visit with us at Today’s Vision.

Myopia and hyperopia, more commonly referred to as nearsightedness and farsightedness respectively, are vision concerns that can typically be corrected with prescription lenses. At Today’s Vision, a thorough eye exam will allow our Humble optometrist, Dr. Jay Pravda, to diagnose your needs and have you seeing better right away.

Myopia is when your see well up close, but you have difficulty seeing things that are further away. This happens because light, which is supposed to focus on your retina directly, instead focuses on the front of your retinas. Risk factors for getting myopia are generally related to genetics. If one parent was nearsighted, you are more prone to it. If both parents had myopia, that increases the chances of you being nearsighted too. Beyond heredity, eye diseases such as keratoconus (a degenerative disease of the cornea) and cataracts can also be the cause of myopia. Be sure to tell our Humble optometrist about your family history as part of your exam.

When light focuses on the back of your retina instead of directly, the result is hyperopia, which means you are able to see things at a distance but not very well up close. Besides heredity, which is a cause of both myopia and hyperopia, you can also develop farsightedness due to retinopathy, an eye disease that sometimes affects people with diabetes. Although eye tumors can lead to hyperopia, this is obviously not a very common cause. Any difficulties with seeing things near to you should motivate you to make an appointment with our Humble optometrist.

There are symptoms of both myopia and hyperopia that you should be aware of. With myopia, blurry vision when trying to focus on things in the distance is a common sign. Others include headaches due to eye strain and difficulties with night driving. Hyperopia is typically marked by blurry vision when focusing on things up close. If you experience any of those signs, you should schedule an exam with our Humble optometrist. A new pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses will usually be all you need to find significant improvement in your visual ability.
